Freedom comes from letting go.
Have you ever watched the show hoarders? It’s a pretty extreme show about people who have so much stuff that they are no longer able to use rooms in their home and in some cases they are facing eviction or other legal actions. You look at the people and you think how can that happen? It happens little by little. To some degree it happens to most of us. In some area of our lives there’s something that we can’t give up, something we can’t seem to complete, something we are emotionally tied to.
It brings to mind something I heard the other day- If you told a 100 people that they would die in a year if they didn’t change certain things in their life that maybe only 3 people would change. Ouch! So let’s face it change isn’t easy. The hoarding show helps me to see the lengths we go to, to hold on to stuff. Its extreme but it makes me get rid of stuff. It makes me want to streamline. So yesterday I did it. I took every single thing out of my closet and then I painted it. I made a built in shoe rack and I added another spot for hanging clothes. It felt great to let go.
It is so clear that the stuff weighs us down. I think that clutter can be physical and mental. The stuff clutters our mind, it clutters our closets, it clutters our garages, and it clutters every place that we can close ourselves off from. Somewhere we believe that in the stuff we are more. If we have more, do we have more to show for our lives? Are we more important?
You may have a neat home and not a lot of stuff around you but what about on your mind. How much of what you’re dealing with is clutter in your head? Are you obsessing over things that are out of your control? Are you playing and replaying events in your head? Do you worry about everything? Whatever it is that is keeping you from being right here and right now is clutter.
Today I challenge you to clean out that closet you’ve been putting off or the garage that is filled with half projects and stuff you don’t use anymore. By freeing up the stuff you free up the energy around it. If the clutter is in your head, than I challenge you to a day of action. Fill your day with things you need to get done and maybe something you can do for someone else. If you’re in action and you feel productive, than you’re more prone to not have cluttered head space. In action we are able to find fulfillment. Then in the stillness we can have something to reflect on.
Today I am grateful for my organized closet. I am grateful for all of the clothes that I have and all that I was able to give away.
